Artist Spotlight: Keisha

Name: Keisha Murdock @Hairpassion93
Occupation / Salon Name: Owner of Standing Ovations Salon – Alpharetta, Georgia
What do I love about the professional beauty industry? I love to make everyone beautiful when they look in the mirror. I love to see them post my work and love their hair even more. I really love doing transformations before and after that’s so exciting to me it gives me chills to know that I am blessed with this talent that I have. I even love to see our up and coming stylist enjoy this industry. I love to lend a helping hand where it’s needed. That’s why I love this profession every day!
What is the most meaningful part of my role as a Black artist in beauty? That fact that as a Black small business owner and as a Black stylist, I can showcase all my Natural Beauties in my chair and all the textures of hair that come in and out my shop is a blessing. I love that we have different looks to achieve, a lot of our hair is different in textures, such as coarse, medium, fine so as I always teach and tell other stylists that it’s scary to do ethnic hair. It’s hair, right? We have different ways of styling our hair. We can be more versatile with color on our hair so being a Black artist in this beauty industry is a blessing. I get to showcase a lot of my work that is exciting to move texture in different ways and forms.
What is fun fact about you? I love trying anything different. I love putting my hands in things and trying to see what I can achieve at the end of any task. I love being different and having others try to figure me out. I’m a fun person and love to lend a lending hand wherever I can.
Who is someone that inspires you? My mom. She taught me all I know today. She always said the sky’s the limit in everything you do and achieve in life nobody is gonna just hand it to you, you’ve got to work hard for whatever you want. My mom was a single parent raising 2 kids on her own and I thank God for her because I would not be the person I am today. She always told me to look in the mirror every day and tell yourself you’re beautiful. Growing up, nothing was easy, but my mom made it look that way. So today I truly say thank you so much for raising me and forming me into the woman I am today. Hats off to her!
What is your favorite Wella, Nioxin, OPI, ghd, Clairol, Color Charm, Kadus or Sebastian product and why? Illumina – I just love the dimension it gives to all shades of color. I LOVE the gray coverage it gives and the brightness when the color hits natural light.
Sebastian Dark Oil – that’s a no brainer. I love everything about this line: the shampoo, conditioner, and the mask. You can use it all day every day with no build up. I need that because I am natural and can’t wash my hair every day.
Do you have any tips for those who are uncomfortable servicing textured hair? Just being comfortable and not to panic when you see someone coming to your chair with massive texture. I always tell new up and coming stylist hair is hair just different textures and natural hair is wavy, spiral, zig zag, curl. To style natural hair is amazing!
