Color Reducer Versus Color Remover

Color Corrections bring some of us joy and some of us pure panic! Wella Design Team member, Jamie Pierce, recently offered a free class on color reducers versus color removers. Jamie helps you easily see when to use reducers or removers with several visual demonstrations on hair swatches and a mannequin. We highly recommend you take 45 minutes to watch her Instagram Live below and see for yourself why Color Renew has become one of her favorite products in the salon.
What is Color Renew? It is a zero-damage color reducer to adjust, change, and correct undesired permanent color results. Color Renew allows for more frequent color changes because it respects the hair’s natural melanin and structure.

Color Correction Tips:

  • Do not panic. Know where to start and where you want to end.
  • Do not shame your clients for a bad DIY color
  • Know your worth.

Before you start:

  1. Establish the TRUE problem: It’s either too cool, too warm, too dark, or it’s too light. Or is it a combination, like banding.
  2. Determine the cause: demi, semi, etc.
  3. Find a suitable solution : how long will it take, how many sessions, the cost.
  4. Test strand the darkest area and show the client, this is how far we can get you today.
  5. Never guarantee an exact results.
  6. Have Fun! The result will always be better than when they came in.

WHEN TO USE A REDUCER VS. A REMOVER

Color Renew: A zero damage color reducer. Reduces the oxidative dye molecules within hair color. It’s less aggressive than a remover.
  • Color Renew is easy and reliable.
  • The mixing ration is ALWAYS the same, the timing is the only thing that varies. 1:10
  • It maintains the natural melanin, always. This is why it is zero damage.
  • Reduces oxidative color only.
  • Can be used multiple times in a day.
  • Climazon friendly.
  • Perfume, peroxide, and sulfate free.
  • VC2 Technology, patented technology, used to reduce the oxidative color.
Color Removers: Blondor Family of Lighteners: Multi-Blonde Powder, Extra Cool Blonde Powder, and Soft Blonde Cream
If the hair is too dark, too cool, or too warm and a semi-permanent color needs to be removed, this is when you will use Blondor to remove the color.
There are three levels of removal that you can provide with using Blondor as a color removal:
  1. Cleansing Rinse: This is for subtle change and takes 5-10 minutes.
  2. Mild Lightener: This is for minimal removal like, color build up, and takes 5-15 minutes.
    • 1 oz Blondor + 4 oz Pastel Developer or Color Touch Emulsion 1.9%
  3. Banding Removal: This is for 1-3 levels of lift and takes up to 50 minutes.
    • Mix Blondor and developer in a ratio of 1:2 to 1:4  based on a strand test
