With Halloween rapidly approaching, it is no surprise that one of the most requested and wearable Halloween hair color trends is inspired by Cruella de Vil. Variations of Cruella hair started gaining traction this year following the release of Disney’s new movie, Cruella, starring Emma Stone. Variations of this color-blocking trend were also seen this year on celebrates like Gwen Stefani and Selena Gomez. When creating your next Cruella look, follow our highlighted stylist formula above and check out the additional tips below. Use your creativity to customize your color selection and placement based on your client’s hair type and comfort level with color-blocking.

What is the industry term for this color technique?

Color-blocking is the term for this technique. A phrase common within fashion and art, color-blocking hair includes pairing opposite or contrasting colors together to create a contemporary color design. One of the defining methods of color-blocking hair color includes taking a large section and coloring from the scalp through the ends.

Natural or darker level single process color clients

For natural or all-over dark color-treated hair clients who have expressed interest in going lighter, introduce them to the world of blonding with a Cruella color-blocked style. Lightening half of the head or a large panel variation will allow your client to experience the power of blonde hair without diving into an all-over blonde. On this type of client use Blondor by Wella Professionals to lighten. Work with foils and back-to-back slices. This will allow you to control your lift and help you avoid lifting your client’s darker or natural hair. Complete the look by applying a Color Touch Demi-Permanent Pure Naturals shade to the root. Applying a soft shadow at the root will help soften the line at the base of the foils, creating a soft melt from their natural or darker hair tone into the platinum color-blocked area. Another option to tone the blonde section is Color Touch 10/81 Lightest Blonde/Pearl Ash Demi-Permanent.
***Always mix Color Touch with Color Touch Emulsion (1.9% or 4%)

Platinum blondes looking to go darker

If your clients are looking for an alternative to high-maintenance blonde, introduce them to the dark side by experimenting with a large section or panel of dark hair before you take the plunge and deepen all of their platinum hair with an all-over single-process color. Once you have determined the section of hair you would like to deepen, apply a mask to the rest of their blonde hair and leave the mask on while applying the darker color. A mask will help revive pre-existing blonde and protect the blonde hair from possible color bleeding with the darker color. Our recommendation for a blonde mask would be Wella Professionals Color Fresh Mask Pearl Blonde. This color depositing mask will tone and condition. Have your clients use this at-home treatment weekly to maintain their blonde.
***Wear gloves. Apply generously to pre-shampooed, towel-dried hair. Rinse. Style. Go.

Fashion / Pastel Clients Looking to Make a Bold Change

Your fashion color and pastel clients are likely already comfortable making a statement. Cruella-inspired hair is the perfect opportunity to take a break from bold color and experiment with high-impact blonde and intense neutral hues of brown. When lifting out any fashion or pastel color, consider using BlondorPlex Multi Blonde Dust-Free Powder Lightener with Bond Builder Technology. Our innovative BlondorPlex results in up to 97 % less breakage.
***Depending on the desired degree of lightening and consistency, mix BlondorPlex powder with Welloxon Perfect Crème Developer 1.9%, 4%, 6%, 9% or 12% in a ratio of 1:1.5 up to 1:2
