Title: Studio Owner / Kique Studios / Rockville, Maryland
What is the most meaningful part of your role as a Hispanic artist in beauty?
Understanding all types of texture. My mother is from Puerto Rico and she was a hairstylist so growing up she wanted me to learn how to treat style and cut coarse hair. I helped in her salon after school and learned so much about my culture being with her at work. My mother did everything at the salon from shampoo tech to hairstylist. I just didn’t only learn hair, but also what needed to be done through the salon to have a successful busy day.
What is your favorite Wella, Nioxin, OPI, Clairol, Color Charm, Kadus or Sebastian product and why?
Oil Reflections – I love it because it leaves the hair super soft and also smells amazing. My clients at Kique Studios also love it because it moisturizes their hair. Amazing on curly hair too! Do you have any advice for Hispanic stylists trying to grow their career?
My advice for another Hispanic stylist is to own our culture and make sure we use both languages behind the chair. Having different ways of communicating is KEY. When I was picking my studio name, I kept Kique because that’s a Latino nick name for Enrique. I get clients all the time come to me and say I felt so comfortable coming cause when I saw the salon name I knew you were Hispanic so sometimes the language might be an issue and I speak both English and Spanish.
